    Dodge alternator in Jeep TJ

Well the bearings went on the 136 amp alternator that I swapped in less than a year ago. I got advance to warranty it and replace it with a 160 amp for a dodge durango. Seems like it will bolt in fine, both are externally regulated. Only difference is the plugs for the field windings. Anyone know which terminal is positive and which is negative in the field windings plug. Alternator is ment for a 2002 dodge durango with the 5.9 but going into a 97 jeep TJ.

One terminal will be the generator source and one will be the generator field. Just don't know which is which.

Or can these wires be swapped back and forth without ill effects?

If you go into advance ask to see a new alternator off your tj. there should be a paper in there with the wiring for the plug. compare that to the new alternator and make magic happen.

I have a wiring schematic for my jeep and know which color wires are what on my alternator. What I don't know is the wires on my new durango alternator. Its just a plug. The paper work inside is worthless and I haven't been able to find a schematic for a 2002 durango.

Thats odd. Usually the alternators come with a paper that has all of the wiring for the alternator.

Don't get me wrong there is paper work in there. It shows the plug port on the back of the alternator and it basically says to plug it in. The individual terminals with in the plug are not labeled.

Can some investigation with a volt ohm meter give you the answer?

Thats what I have been toying around with. I may take it down to advance, have them test it. Then test their plug lead they plug into the alternator to see what side is + and what side is -.

The test book for the alternator is labeled as to what each wire does. That should solve your problems.

Don't know if I can post pics. Never tried. I just used real small crimp on spade connectors that pushed right on to the spades of the alternator. You could get the right plug from a bone yard or napa might even be able to get it for you but the spade connectors are what I had on hand so thats what I used.

do you have any numbers on the dodge alternator?
Also can you confirm that you installed this into your '97 TJ?
    what engine?
...there is a lot of conflicting info out there regarding what will fit.

I put this alternator in my 97 TJ with the 4.0 engine. I did not do any wireing upgrades. I have been running it for the past 4 months without so much as a hick up. I will try to stick my head under the hood soon to get some numbers off the alternator. I was recently contacted by a member of the forum who also preformed this swap with a few questions. He has been running for the past couple days with out any issue.
