I knew an underage guy that took a 87 Buick Somerset wheeling up at Glassport, PA with an empty quarter barrel in the back seat. The next day I (I mean my friend) couldn't even tell what color the car was any more. Even had mud on the roof.
Yeah the cable usually breaks between the 5-25ft mark, the prob is the the other guys that use it either dont how to use a cable properly and/or just dont give a fawk. It drives me effin crazy. Every chance i get, I respool the cable the right way under load. I always leave the cable anchored to the rear of the bed with the bridle clusters and a little bit of load. I thats the one thing that is always done no matter who is driving it.
I know the one old guy is a lazy bastard who only cares about himself and will winch out untill there is enough cable free to do the job, of course by this point the spool is a birds nest. He dont care, he will winch in untill it starts to yank. He does this as opposed to pulling the freespool and dragging the cable out, he doesnt tie anything down, he doesnt dump the air bags when loading or unloading, and wont throttle up when using the PTO. He is know all ignorant bastard. And thats just one of the other guys that use this truck....
It really fires me up, because it the cable always breaks on me, cause I'm the one that gets to go out and do the fun ones/heavy ones. First time it broke, the cable almost slapped me in the face.
But, yeah.... Thanks for the reccomendation. lol

I'm so happy we rairly have to share a truck...
I wish we didnt, but we dont have someone in it 24/7. So when were not in it, were in the shop. That being said, I do my best to take care of it. I'm the only one who will wash it, polish it, clean it out, organize the tool box, etc. I do it cause its easier on me and its a damn nice truck. I just hate to see a 100k+ truck cover in road salt and corroded polished aluminum.
Then there is the big truck....and they broke that one too. Its a 30 ton boom and they managed to break it. Century has warrantied it and sent us a new one but still.... damn.
And here is another pic just for size comparison...

30 ton big? Thats small.
I have seen them break like that. Somebody doesn't know how to use it. Reminds me the time walking through the factory and seeing a another companies truck in the shop getting a new boom. When I came back I asked around if anyone knew what happened. The guy who owned was keeping it on the down low. It was funny to see his face when I asked him at a Christmas party what his truck was doing up at the factory. Man he turned red and pulled me to the side. He was not to happy to have the secret out he bent his 40t rotar.
I would love to operate a 45T roto, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Big is a relative term, so I guess I should say "our" big truck.
Either way, I like them both. Both are Petes and the "big" one is in our shop getting rehabbed. Engine, trans, drive line, pto's, boom, etc etc.
Supposedly, they are spec'ing out a new truck to replace the old big one. Not sure what its gonna be, but I doubt were getting another pete.
Wrectum who do you work for if you don't mind me asking?

Haha, that's the best post by a new member I've seen yet. I agree with you - we've all done stupid things, we simply learn that stupid costs. I don't want to see anyone getting hurt.

**** that "feel good everyone deserves a chance to learn" bull shit. There are places to drink. Behind the wheel of anything is never one of them.
Chris' case is a special one. The kid who was drunk driving and nearly killed his significant other was "learning" not to be stupid for the 3rd time (2 prior DUI offenses and driving on a suspended license). Not everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. I hope you never get to be the one to walk into that same accident scene.
Needless to say, we don't have any tolerance for drinking and driving. Its reckless, irresponsible, and it hurts the people we love. Period, end of story.

he'd have to be on the road to get to the place right? and lets face it, he's dumb enough to take a ****ing car down in the woods, he's dumb enough to drive drunk...seriously....and i thought OP said they were drinking?
1. Topic is "Don't think about off-roading while drunk"
2. Buick's don't get to that place/situation without first traveling ON the road.
3. What was the plan then? go drive the Buick "off-road" while drunk (how much is irrelevant...drunk is drunk) and then magically sober up and drive back on the same road? They obviously weren't equipped to spend the night there, so it would appear they had plans to leave at some point!
I've been here long enough to know that you're smart enough to figure out exactly how it would have went had they not gotten stuck. Like I said to Matt, I hope you never get to walk into that accident scene because someone thought they were smart/tough/sober enough to not have it happen to them.

Two, most of us have been there. I learned my lesson. Granted these idiots went a little further than I ever have while drunk. I was usually too concerned about getting my butt home in one peice.
I use to wheel my lumina all the time. I didn't have enough $$ for a 4x4. I got stuck a million times but always found my own way out.
Again, I'm not arguing - but I don't think wishing someone DEAD because they made a mistake is the way to go. I've made mistakes as big as this asshat - difference is I admit to them, learn from them, and move on.
Chris's case is not this case of one dumbass who was only in a position to hurt himself.
To reiterate, that DOES NOT make it OK - but wishing someone dead doesn't help much.

Ok. I was trying to get you back on topic, you seemed to be getting a bit wound up. I don't disagree that the guy was/is a tard. We don't have a very detailed story here and I hate to see people wish death/dismemberment/sodomy/etc on people for a possibly minor offense. I know many people who have wheeled their car sober.

Well, he may have driven home while he was drunk, I don't know.
He might have gotten drunk at his place (next door to me) and where he got stuck is over the fields and through the woods, right behind our place, so if he did get drunk while at home, he never did drive on the road to get there. Again, I don't know for sure.
But I do know he admitted he got into the situation due to alcohol.

I know what I was and I know what I am now. Do I do the same shenanigans that I did when I was 19, HELL NO! Who does? Something else that I don’t do is preach at people. This was intended to be a light hearted story. Maybe next time I tell the story when I drove to a charity and arrived safely. That’s much more entertaining. (sarcasm alert)...........LOL
