    Killed my power steering...

well the pump is shot, sounds like theres an angry badger inside of it, chewing on all the bells and whistles that make it work. I had checked it before and it had a good amount of fluid in it, when it started to make noise I checked it and it was a bit low, now it just enjoys pouring fluid...

If it's the same as the 5.2L zj pump, and I think it is, I'll sell you one of my two spares cheap.

But you must admit the plane took off just fine.

x2! It doesn't matter if its winter or not, the tranny still gets hot.

You should also look into a steering box brace while your messing with the box/pump.

Andrew its not the box... its the pump on the engine... Has nothing to do with the tires, pump started leaking and starved itself.

I'm saying you might want to look into a brace though...XJ frame rails are weak where the box is connected. With 35"s it would be a good idea instead of doing frame repair later.

BTW! I have only seen one picture...you need to get some more!

    Update:

Its officially the pump, when I pulled it off, there was metal pieces falling out of where the seal should be...

no clue how it went bad so fast, my 96 never had any issues with the pump...

So I tore out the old pump, fought with the damn pully only to buy a new one because the old one didnt want to come off, for 14 bucks why not just replace it... So I get the new pully on the new pump, then go to install it only to find a hole in the back of the brand new pump! WTF, I mean I know I was rushing to get this done, but still, gotta love the junk advanced sells... So I get to rock out in the Libby tomorrow, take back the pump and get another one... They best be able to transfer my pully too, im not buying another one.

Did you use a PS pump puller to get the pulley off...?

no, I just got a new pully, it was only 14 bucks... I tried to pull the old pully off, but it just wouldnt come off, it ended up destroying the lip that is used to pull the pully.

You could have put that 14$ towards your alignment!

If you didnt use the puller then you more than likely F'd up the new pump as well. From the sounds of it, you just hammered the new pulley on. That 'lip' that you destroyed is what the puller uses to pull the old pulley off and press it back on to the new pump.

The pulleys on 99.9% of power steering pumps are 'pressed' on. There not going to just pop on and off. Do yourself a favor and just rent the right tool the first time (well...in your case the 3rd time).

PS coolers do amazing things, if that pump got hot enough (and it can!) it could easily cook that seal

I put PS coolers on both our ZJ's & a big aux tranny cooler on the 93' (94 is a stick) & have been amazed at the difference they make! (in smoothness even, let alone longevity)

Somehow I doubt the installation of the 35's and the >200 miles I have put on it had much of an effect on it...

I don't think his point was to blame your tires, I think he is getting at a good point though. You're starting fresh so do it right from the start. Throw a small cooler on there, and you'll probably never replace that pump again!

I would also look into drilling out the brass bushing in there that controls the flow. I as reading a write-up on it a few days ago. I'll dig it up once my tequilla headache goes away. It flows a bit more fluid, greatly increasing your handling on road, and providing better turning power while in the dirt/rocks.
If I wanted to hear from an ass, I'd fuckin fart.

Metal in fluid. Better flush that box and hoses. Just buy lots of fluid and put the return hose in bucket and run it for awhile. They also make in line filters for p/s fluid. Uses to see them at a place near east liberty.

If you found pieces of metal falling out, that fluid can't be clear. It may look it, but there is surely some metal fragment in there.

I dumped all of the fluid out of the old res. so ill go through it with a magnet to see if I can pick anything up. Honestly I think the bearing on the front of the pump was just shot.
