With all my questions and posts lately I'm sure most of you know I'm "upgrading" the Jeep. It's an 02 Tj that just rolled 80k miles, I daily drive it, and don't mind beating it hard when I take it offroad.
I consider myself to be more of a techinal driver but i'm not afraid to slam the skinny pedal if that's what it takes. Due to the skinny pedal and some parts that just have proven they aren't up to snuff, I'm busting out the sawzall and we'll see where it leads. Alot of research has gone into this, but by no means does that mean I have a clue in hell as to what I am really doing. I hope to keep it close to "legalish" so I can keep driving it on the road but...

So over the last few months I've been enquiring and aquiring alot of parts for this build up.

I started with some new recovery gear.






Figured I could use it all for when the current jeep setup shits out on me on the trail anyways.

Then I happened into a really good deal. A guy saw I posted up about a set of hummer rims on Pirate pm'd me and says he has a set of aluminums with 3 miles on them that never left the dealership. I call him and he asks what else am I looking for, I jokingly (yeah I wasn't even serious) say a late 80's D60 he says "I got one". Rims and axle $950 and he ment in State college from Philly area on Easter day...score!!




The day after easter I stripped the 60 I must say that was the easiest part I have EVER worked on, I had everything off in like 2 hours, using a HF grinder and hand tools. The beef of this thing compared to my P.O.S. d30 is awesome





Since it was a spur of the moment purschase and i had nothing else to go with it I set it to the side and have been researching waiting for deals.

I was researching on pirate and came across KirbyIV's build and loved the length and stance of his jeep


Just so happened that he was redoing some of his stuff and his rear stretch tank was going up for sale. So a few Pm's and a money order later.






I started looking at rear D60's but for the $$$ to upgrade and narrow a 14B would easily sufice. John00tj off the board here had one So I ran down and somehow?? not quite sure still how but we got that pig up inside the Jeep for me to haul home. Thanks John

I have no room here in Pittsburgh to work on any of this since i live in a second story apt, above a bar with no garage. Here is my "shop" that I do any small stuff I can out of.

So it all ends up at my parents waiting for 3 day weekends





This allows me lots of time to read and draw up ideas in my head. I was able to pick up some stock xj coils from Steve.


with a triangulated 4 link rear stretch about 6 inches approx, and the bend of the frame that far back they should give me about 2.5-3 inches of lift, which will keep me a very low center of gravity and with a homebrew highline/rev111 influenced flares allow me plenty of room to get new bigger shoes in there. Should they be 2 short I located a v8 set of zj coils which should net about 4 inches as a back up. I'm really thinking with gas prices being what they are I will do 37" KM2's for the street and 39" Iroks, SX's, or Pitbull Rockers for offroad.
I currently only have about 4" of uptravel in the rear and it rarely bottoms out onroad, offroad I think I could use another inch. But it will really vary with new shocks and the xj or zj springs. My downtravel is limited only by my shocks.I like the ride of the Bilstein 5150's but have also been looking into adjustables. I will be raising the shock tower to fit taller shocks in and have really been considering FOA airbumps for both front and rear.

If they fit a 17 inch rim I may be interested. I'm keeping the stock front Ford knuckles rotors and calipers for now, which run a bit bigger than the chevy stuff and it looks like a 17 will be the smallest i can run till I can afford to swap it all over to the chevy stuff.

It was all about timing, My parents were comming down with the truck the next day, but John already had plans. So I had to pick it up it, so they could haul it home for me, that next day. The Jeep rode and braked fine with it in there but it did want to move around abit. Loading it in was the hard part, being as it was laying on the ground and we had to heave it up into a lifted jeep.

Plans for the front currently consist of narrowing the 60, running high steer arms possibly running the tie rod behind the axle(we'll see how space works out for that one), flat clocking the steering box and pushing it forward 3 inches with hydro assist, 14" FOA coiloovers and bumpstops.


So today I stopped at Tractor Supply and guess what was on sale...the Hobart Handler 187 for $599.99. So I spent part of the day trying to get it wired into my parents laundry room (with enough cord to pull out the window and work in the yard) for now since the box in the garage is full. I also ripped out the old gas tank in preperation for the BTF tank to go in. Talk about a bitch job, it was about half full (not really heavy but friggin awkard. I ended up having to cold chisel every bolt off, the sender ring refused to turn. and the vent hose already had the end cut off so it's short??? it will need replaced.

Don't narrow the axle! No no no! That's foolish. With the H2 backspacing of 5.5", you will be almost as narrow as a TJ with 3.5" BS. Some wider flares, and you're set. You really don't want to mess around with custom length shafts.
Stick with the Ford outers. I have Chevy stuff, and it's a tight fit for 17s. Those old trucks all came with 16 or 16.5 wheels. The only weak spot on the Fords are the actual knuckle. They break. Go for a set of Deadenbear (now Reid Racing) knuckles and be done. You would break the bank to swap everything over to Chevy.

Start looking for a set of 5.38s as well. You don't want to skimp on gearing with big tires.

i agree with Dan on this one. With the willys, i was always afraid of breaking an axle. Just because i knew they were custom cut and splined.

i just cut my rear like this today ..its kind of crazy taking a cutoff wheel to perfectly good sheet metal ..LOL...you`ll have to check it out this weekend

Well a few updates, this thing is living up to it's name. I got nothing accomplished that I really wanted to. Shit at home was really busy and that detracted from the work time. As did searching for parts that were broken or ended up broken or unusable.
Tally was
2 rusted/broken off retaining straps on the stock tank taht I found when I lowered it.
1 replaced vent hose that was cut short previsiously
1 new flexable fuel line, old one was to short
7 new bolts holding cover old ones had to be cut off
1 modified BTF skid that didn't want to make room for short fuel line.
And 1 new fuel sending unit it looks like... some how while sitting in a box on the shelf out of reach the output tube got bent and it now has a hair line crack at the base

On the positive I think I actually lost weight if that is possible with this new tank? Even thought it weighed 70 some odd lbs, the old skid was FULL of mud inside, making it just as heavy.
Also it's showing about 7.5 inches that I can move the rear axle back. Pretty stoked about that, it easily gives me the room to slide the 14b with the thick ass Ruffstuff cover back about 5.5"-6" which is what I was looking for.

I got to play with the new welder for abit and WOW is this an upgrade from my shitty 70amp campfield hausell(sp) stick welder that I had taught myself on. Also my new auto darkening helmets (HF) are damn good for the price, I have only used the fixed shade ones to compare against but I was highly satisified with being able to see b4 and during the weld.
I grabbed some rusty scraps that I had cut off and burnt them together without a problem then layed into them with a vise and sledge they held real well I'm sure if I had prepped them it would have been better but I was having fun playing.
I have to get a cart though and since right now I'm welding in the yard at the opposite end from the garage. I'm thinking one of those big expanded metal wagons would be the best bet, just gotta figure out how to fix a tank on at a later point.

Also I guess I never explained why I "named" it fawked. Well long story short I fawked myself and this build a few days b4 I started this thread I was paying bills online, watching tv, and who knows what else. Well somewhere in there I put an extra zero at the end of the amount I was paying towards my student loans so instead of $190... Yeah you get the picture. I'm pissed at myself for not paying attention but it's *probably* where I should be putting the money anyways. So there might be a delay in my build while I try and rebuild my bank account.

To replace my beat ass ricer seats, Corbeau's from Northridge4x4


Gonna make it slide so others can drive (Summit had them at my door 16hrs after I ordered)

The stock fuel tank is forsale mud and all j/k. The new one is bad ass I will love it once I get it mounted again for the 4th or 5th time. (A body lift or having those speed nuts that look like star washers would make mounting hella easy compared to what it is now) Just waiting to see if JB weld will work on the crack on the fuel pump or if I have to order a new one.

And John thanks again for helping me load that fat pig of a 14b!! I started to shave it but ended up hanging out and never got to finish working on it. Having a garage down here would make this so much easier.

When I get the Jeep back down here, someone have a Swr meter and willing to dial in my cb? I got the Firestick II antenna with the tunable tip if that helps.
