If that takes any longer, Steve will have to put you on his healthcare benefits as a dependent.

Me? Hell locating parts has been the only real holdup we are moving for as often as we get down there.

As for the exhaust, I had 2 ideas. one may work and allow the jeep to fall into the legalish category, with the exhaust dumping outside of the tub area. The other is like Steve said hide the important stuff and throw a turn down on it.

Well I finally got a new car so the Jeep now doesn't have any deffinate done date, I can afford to have it in pieces till I feel it is what I want. Gives me time to pick pieces and customize parts just for fun now. The new car is an 04 Cavilier LS Sport, standard, with 55k. and price was about half of book price so I can't complain. Sometimes waiting works out for ya.

Yeah there are a couple of vehicles that need to come in once my heep gets the hell out. Maybe the MJ needs to move with yoder axles!! J/k once my shit gets the shock towers and brakes it will be taking some time off so I can rebuild some funds and pay this car off. I am not a fan of owing money so I have been trying to keep this a cash build. I would expect the Jeep to be out this week some time even if it is just residing where the yota was for awhile.

BTW- John any word on that fuel pump? I'll call you tommorrow if I don't hear back, I'm gonna need one soon let me know if you stumbled on one or will part yours

i must say those arms do look good tho and those welds are amazing. I considered making my own at one point but figured that anything that could go wrong, would... and didn't. Maybe some day i'll get a higher paying job to afford a clayton long arm kit.

Steve was already talking about your suspension and how he could redo it, I believe you have a spacer block in there now...Steel is cheap

The little time I was there and looking at your build, it appears that steve knows his shit. But yea i have a 2" a-arm spacer in there. When I was looking into it I was going to get upper arms to ditch the a-arm and go with a 4 link but I wasn't spending 1100 on it (plus another 1k for the front). I guess if you guys ever get slow and feel like working on a long arm kit... i'll just have to donate my heep

We made it down there today. Now its time for a new rear drive shaft and brake calipers. The heep is on its own weight everything is welded we cut the crusher corners out and started a rear bumper. Dave and Matt (Overkillzj) stoped down and helped on some of the heavy shit. I'm at work will post a few pics later tonight, but they are crappy ones off my phone.

  12. #262
Just catching up on your build. Looks real good. I really like the little cut you guys did on the end of the square tube to the adapters I might have to borrow that little trick. What are you going to do for a gas tank? Another little trick piece I have in my arsenal if your interseted.
Is this Alum weld in ring. It still uses the factory pump/pick up, and the gas gauge will still work as it should no need for resistors etc. to get a 90 ohm GM unit to work.

I got the BTF stretch tank its the shit. provided 6ish inches of stretch and is solid as hell. Also uses a stock pump once I find one that isn't broke.

here's the welded up axle. (pics with bump stops attached didn't come out, but we drilled and tapped the spring pads and used tall bumpstops to try and keep the up-flex to a minimum but the springs still look like they will bottom out first.)

All finished in, Just need to swap 2 nuts over to lock nuts and get one longer bolt. (thanks for letting me borrow the hardware steve I'll replace it)

I count 8 lugs on there, meaning it's done.

Then it was on to my sheet of steel, time to make some corners. (18.75"tall x 60"long) They are going to the bender this week with one of Bill's PSC Crusher Corners to use as a template. -Thanks Bill

After the corner blanks were cut we decieded that we had the fab table up and ready so we started on the rear bumper. It's gonna be 2"x4" x 1/4"wall I believe. But it will have a few twists should be pretty unique and stong as hell. It will incorperate a reciever so I can tow the boat, tow chain tie offs, and face mount shackles for recovery points.

I will grab a few more, better, pics later this week when we head back down there. It's starting to be a really fun little project, I think we have all learned alot just fabbing this rear suspension, can't wait to test it to see if it's half as good as we think it is. Flex has tons of room. upper coil buckets clear by about 3/4" but with bigger tires it will actually space that farther away, the bulge on these tires is right there. Still alot of small things to do on it but at least it can be moved now. Headed to TSC this week for odds and ends.

I might need lots of time to clear my head this week...so the shop will probably be the place to go. Don't be mad if your bumper is done when you show up.

Also I talked to John today, no fuel pump but he is looking for me. And offered to let me come down to his shop and paint up the crusher corners or whatever with the chasis saver through a fat tip gun. He also has access to some machines I think would be fun, I want to talk to you about some parts. give me a call when you get a chance.

Worked on the Jeep again today, Steve made a bad ass bumper, I jumped around working on some small shit not accomplishing much.

Decieded to brace it with some "extra" fish plates

the reciever hitch needed a fish plate too...

    Full length view

    Hitch finished

    Sexyness

    All finished, Super beef.

The rear crossmember will have to be modified or removed for the hitch to fit. If we leave the crossmember we have to remove some boogerwelds, dumb brackets, and get new hardware. If we replace the crossmember it will require getting creative with the bodymounts and altering the BTF gas tank skid and maybe even the tank it's self. Also if I go with larger tires not sure how close they would get, and if they would rub. I would like the extra clearence with replacing the rear crossmember but not sure I want to have to alter everything else at this point for 2 inches.

    old shocks and 14" Bilsteins

The old shocks were my limiting straps, thougth 14" 's would be long enough, for as low as this is now slung. Should have gotten more pics but with shock towers outside of the frame utilizing 5" of uptravel (to bumpstops) 9" of down travel isn't near enough. This suspension would max that out without even trying. Triangulating them underneath the tub and above the truss doesn't have near enough room to allow any up travel.
Not sure if I should order up some 16" or 18" shocks to allow a shock tower/ rear cage tie-in support. Or if I should use the old shocks triangulated. Only other way I can think of mounting them is on the lower control arms with the shock body in the front of the old wheelwell. Shouldn't require as much shock length or movement but not sure of how that would stress and work with the control arm or affect dampening ability of the shock. Looks like I have some research to do.

Still looking for a stock fuelpump, Gonna need one real soon and the Bosch's are redicilously expensive now anyone know of any?

And just because I passed where Steve jack knifed, on the way to get my new car...

Not to be smart, but your dropping alot of coin on things (axles, shocks, fab time, steel, wheels/tires, etc the list goes on and on) why skimp on things like a fuel pump? I know you could probably find a used one, but really, why go through the hassle of trying to use someone else's junk?

And incase I missed it, what was the point in adding extra plate behind the D-ring brackets?

You'd be suprised all the more I actually have tied up in this thing. Fab time yes but actual $$ isn't as bad as you'd expect. ALOT of waiting and browsing of forsale forums has hooked this build up. The new priced bosch fuelpump was over $600.oo that's why I'm still shopping around. The 6 or 7th junk advanced auto one that I am returning for good this weekend is $221. I'm willing to spend money on it but not to the tune of anything near 500. I found a couple at jy around here gonna make some calls and make sure they have a few day return policy and prob try and pick one of those up. I have a brand new filter, gasket, and hoses. and my chiltons manual even has a fuelpump section in it. If I could get a sending unit only I would just reuse my old one it ran fine.

Really it was to give us just that little extra support to bolt the bumper on with since I will be towing with this bumper, but it came with the added bonus of adding some extra material and strenght for the d-ring brackets as well.

Another thing I am looking for and I am thinking it was posted on here was an excel sheet with a list of shock lengths, valving and some other info. Do any of you have it still?

You didn't miss anything. Theres no need to make up a reason for something you decided to make look cool. It could be considered a theme type idea. Plates on the bumper match the fish plates on the frame notch. I Like to present myself with a little creative challenge from time to time. Definitely dressed up your everyday 2x4 rear bumper. Hope that justifies my creativity.
